Many web sites have sprung up offering KML/KMZ and GPX files for download. These are a great starting point for 3D Route Builder and Active GPX Route Player.

Site Description Climb by Bike Excellent site with lots of info and stories on European mountain passes including many often highly informative KMZ files. GPSies Vast number of routes around the world available in many formats. Share My Route A slick site with many, mostly British, routes. Unusual in that it uses Microsoft Virtual Earth instead of the more typical Google Maps for locating on a map. Map My Ride Professional looking American site with a wide range of routes world wide in KML.  Bikely Another professional site with more emphasis on Europe. Massive data base of routes available as KML or GPX Hybrid GeoTools Web Service Once installed 3D Route Builder offers a selection of demo routes for direct download from web service. Every Trail Professional American slanted site with GPS and KML files for many activities (from hiking to kayaking to balloon flights). Nice thing is that it is clear before downloading whether a file has time-stamp and altitude information - luckily many do! BikeMap.de Large German archive of cycling routes graded by difficulty. Unfortunately the GPX files we checked appear to be lacking time-stamp and altitude information. wikiloc Another attractive looking site with mostly American routes. You need to sign up to download routes. GPS tracks Dutch site with a sizable collection of routes and GPS related news.
